Entering Croatia

Croatia is part of the European Union since 01.07.2013!

Tobacco products (persons older than 17)

200 cigarettes or
100 cigarillos or
50 cigars or
250 g tobacco

Alcohol products (persons older than 17)

1 litre over 22% and
2 litre liquor, dessert or sparkling wine and
2 litres table wine
Beer: Only 2 cans or 2 bottles of beer may be imported for personal consumption!

A passport (valid or expired before max. 5 years) or a valid id card is necessary to enter Croatia for max. 90 days per six months. A national drivers licence is not a valid travel document.
Attention guests who stay over longer periods: If you want to come to Croatia upon expiry of the 90 days and stay another 90 days, you have to leave for 3 months.

The following persons have to have a valid passport: Foreign citizens, who have a hunting or sport weapon or who want import an item that has to be entered in the passport pursuant to the Croatian laws; persons who travel with their minor children who are entered in their passports and the minors. A valid passport is necessary for travels to Dobrovnik, since the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina is passed on the way to Dubrovnik.

Please note: due to the transport provisions of certain airlines (mostly low-cost airlines) passengers with expired passports may be denied the transport. Therefore, we recommend you to use a valid passport or identity card.

Registration duty: hotels, camping sites, private landlords are obliged to register the guests within 24 hours. Tourists who stay in their own homes, have to register on their own within 48 hours from the time of entry into the Republic of Croatia. When entering by boat/yacht, this deadline is 12 hours (port authority). A violation of this obligation is punished with a fine.

Children may be enrolled in either the parent's passport or obtain a passport (for children under 12 - "child's passport"). The ÖAMTC recommends the use of a children’s passport. An entry in the passport of the parents is basically valid until the 18th birthday as long as the passport of the parent has not expired. When applying for a new passport, the entry of the child is not possible if the child is already 12 years old (in this case, the child needs its own passport).

Arriving by Car

When entering Croatia with a car, you need the Green Card as a proof that the vehicle is insured. Vehicles without Green Cards are to be insured at the state border.
